Décor tips to make any room look bigger

A high key room with lamps.

Let’s be real, most of us don’t live in sweeping mansions with a ton of real estate. But that doesn’t mean you can’t give the illusion of a bigger space.  Calculated interior styling is key to making the most of your living spaces and with our top tips, you can make any room look bigger.

Mind the gap

While we all love a large, statement piece of furniture, when you don’t have a lot of space to work with, smaller is better. Opt for pieces of furniture that compliment your space, not overpower it.  For example, if you live alone or with a partner, choose a two-seater sofa over a large corner one. Worried about guests? Pick up a couple of pouffes, beanbags or even a slim bench that you can store or tuck away in corners when you’re home alone.  One simple styling tip to make your room feel bigger is to mind the gap. Leave a space between your furniture and the walls. This stops your living areas looking cramped and ready to burst.

You’ve probably heard this trick before, but mirrors give the illusion of a larger space by reflecting the view they face. They also make a room brighter as they reflect light.  When you’re picking a spot for a mirror, go for high-traffic rooms or an area of your home you wish to reflect. For example, if you place a mirror opposite a window it will give the illusion of a second window and view of the great outdoors. The most popular areas to add a mirror are the entryway, bathroom, living room, study and bedroom. Experiment with different shapes and sizes to put your own spin on the style.

Glassware to impress

You can’t have a bar cart without glasses. Take inspiration from the most popular drinks and include a selection of styles and shapes. You don’t need to have a full set on your cart. Two of each style is a good amount that won’t overcrowd your space. The most popular styles are highball, martini, rocks, wine and margarita glasses. Many designers and stylists advocate for tastefully mismatched pieces and textures. Fine, classic crystal looks great next to delicate glassware with gold rims as they invoke a similar era. Don’t feel scared to mix and match; it’ll only add personality to your bar cart.

rug

Rugs can make or break a room, and it’s all in the sizing. If you’re looking to add one to your living room, you should look for one that runs the length of your sofa (and is around 6” wider on both sides).

Round we go

Round coffee tables are a great way to make a space feel bigger, bonus points if it’s slightly lower than your sofa. You might not think a shape would make a big difference, but the contrast against a rectangular sofa opens up the area between the two pieces. The same rule also applies for your kitchen or dining room, so consider swapping out your current table if you’re looking to amplify your space.

Light it up

lamps in living room

This one might surprise you but using multiple light sources instead of relying on a single overhead light can make a space feel roomier. Placing lamps around a room evens out the light and eliminates shadows that close off the room. Mix it up with lamps of different shapes and sizes and use both side lamps and floor lamps to level your lighting and make a space more interesting.
